Day 4 of Being Deliberate: Working Outside

IMG_2097

Things you should know:

1.  I don’t like to sweat.

2.  I love fresh vegetables.

3.  Working outside = working in the garden.  (Not mowing or picking up pinecones or…)

I love our little garden.  Sadly, I haven’t done much with it since July.  Something about those 100 degree days just kills my gardening mojo.  We enjoyed our fresh veggies as long as they lasted and then left it neglected.  All of September, I would say I was going to work in the garden, but I just never made it…

So, for today, this 4th day of October, I made the deliberate decision to work outside-no matter the weather, no matter the other things I had to do.   Part 1 of our fall garden has been planted!  Woo hoo!  (Yes, the grass needs mowing, but we’ll leave that to Adam!)  I set out transplants of swiss chard, cabbage, kale, lettuces, and broccolli.

4 days into this ‘deliberate’ journey, I’ve already learned been reminded of one lesson:  I must prioritize my time.  If I want to work in the yard, then I have to dedicate an hour to do so.  Plus, an hour in the yard means an hour of sewing after the kids are in bed (or 40 minutes if I focus really hard!)  Being deliberate in my decisions means that I must be deliberate with my time!

Day 3 of Being Deliberate: Make a new friend

Ever feel like the odd man out?  I do.  A lot.  That is why today’s deliberate choice is on my list.  For Day 3, I wanted to choose to speak up, say hi, and make a new friend.

Confession time:  When I first made my list of 31 deliberate choices, I knew that Day 3 would fall on a Wednesday and a Bible study day.  With 250+ women in our Daytime BSF Class, meeting a new friend would be a breeze!

Wouldn’t you know, I got to Bible Study late and then walked to small group with a long-time friend!  So much for meeting someone new!

Then came the reminder that it was fellowship day!  Our small group was to meet at Holly’s house about 15 minutes after dismissal to get to know one another a little better.  Really?  Today?  But,  I had a huge stack of jon jons and longalls and jumpers and bloomers that need to be mailed by Friday and I’d already committed to a project for Thursday morning.  There just wasn’t time to play today.

Or was there?  Remember, I’m supposed to be making deliberate choices this month.  And wouldn’t you know, today was the day that I challenged myself to be deliberate in my relationships with others and make a new friend.

I went to the fellowship.  For an hour, I ate, laughed, prayed, listened, and talked with 8 other women.   In that short time of simple fellowship, I didn’t make one friend–I made 8!

Friendship starts with conversation.  So…let’s talk.  Are any of you trying something new for the 31 days of October?  How are you doing hanging in there on Day 3?

Day 2 of Being Deliberate: Being Grateful

I picked a doozy of a day to chose to be grateful!  🙂

Trash from the Roof

Actually, I have so many blessings to count:

  • I spent the morning with my mom!
  • I got a new roof!
  • My kids are healthy and happy!
  • My hubby gets off at 5 today!
  • I have friends that can jump in to help at the last minute!
  • My sisters rock! (and Susie’s new CPA certificate thingy looks awesome in her office!)
  • My kids are at a great school and I get to tell others about it!
  • Belk’s had really cute summer dresses for $4.98!!!!
There is a story about each of these blessings.  To be honest, I could have complained (and I may have briefly) about each of those stories.  BUT…Instead, I choose to be grateful!

Steamroller Blessings

IMG_1884 IMG_1890

Wowzer!  September rolled in like a steamroller.

First there was Isaac.  School was canceled for the kids, but we only had a day of misting rain.  Not really a big deal, just a hiccup in our routine.

Then…a valve broke in the bathroom.  Lots of water.  We knew we’d need a new vanity, but we were certain we could dry the water out of the carpet by the door.  Yeah…not so much.  We’re getting new carpet.  One day.  Like October, thanks to back order.

Next, a roof leak.  Or at least we thought it was a leak.  Guess what!  We’re getting a new roof.  Ask me what I know about finding a roofer.

Then the tires.  We were saving to replace them, but I didn’t plan to do that until this week.  A nail in one of the tires changed that plan for me and last week, I spent a morning with the friendly guys at our local tire shop.  The coffee wasn’t great, but the cold Cokes were!

But, through it all, it really has been easy to count my blessings:

  • Running water.
  • A roof over my head.
  • Homeowners’ insurance, not-so-scary deductibles, and a really nice adjuster.
  • My family that would do anything they could for me.
  • Customers who so graciously understood my shipping delays this month.
  • I get to repaint.  Woo Hoo!
  • We are healthy. Praise the Lord.  (I did take one round of antibiotics this month, but thankfully, they knocked out my bronchitis quickly!)
  • God grants us enough, financially, to cover our needs.

I’m studying Genesis this year through BSF.  I have marveled at the way God created this world (Genesis 1:1-2:3).  He formed earth and filled it to provide for us.  Especially in the details, we can see the way God has provided for humans—the fruit trees he created to feed us, the stars he placed in the sky to help us tell time, the sky He separated from the waters to fill with air we need to breathe.

During our crazy steamroller-month of September, we see God working in the details at our house.  The carpet on back-order?  Couldn’t be installed yet, and therefore, couldn’t be ruined by the roof leak.  Those tires we weren’t sure we’d saved for enough?  About $3 less than what we’d saved.  Those 4 hours waiting at the tire shop?  Time to update my shops.  That busted valve?  The plumber looked at the others and told which we needed to fix sooner rather than later to avoid more problems.  Selecting carpet?  Much needed one-on-one time with my hubby to rediscover what we like and what we don’t.

In the middle of my little mess

I forget how big I’m blessed

This is the stuff that gets under my skin

And I’ve gotta trust You know exactly what You’re doing

It might not be what I would choose

But this is the stuff You use
