Hey Y'all! I'm Salinda. Welcome to my little piece of the South. I'm a sewing instructor and the seamstress behind PersonaliTy Children's Clothes. I'm crazy in love with my hubby and Momma to 2 spunky swimmers! I'm addicted to Sonic Cokes, my New Orleans Saints, and Jesus!

Wearing the Trend: NEON! (aka how to compromise with your 10 year old)

Neon!

Remember that trend from the 80s.  Glow in the dark pinks and yellows and greens.  It’s enough to burn your retinas!

Well…it’s back.  And thanks to the displays near the front door of our local Target, my daughter is in love with these crazy colors!

After a little conversation and a little compromise, we figured out how my 10-year-old could embrace the neon trend and keep Momma and Daddy happy at the same time.

It’s all about the accessories.  After all, less is more!

Pink:

We grabbed this cute little dress off the rack at Target.  I’d love for her to wear dresses all the time, but my little athlete scoffs at that idea.  We compromised with a dress Momma liked, leggings that she insisted on, and a white sweater belted with a burn your eyeballs glow-in-the-dark pink belt!

Yellow:

This color is intense!  This outfit is also her choice for Easter.  For my fellow church members, I apologize in advance.  Just don’t stare at the scarf for too long!  I love seersucker (surprise, surprise).  I also think that yellow and blue are perfect for the spring.  The skirt is a basic little skirt with a drawstring waist.    She paired it with a white top and sweater and this scarf that she had to have.  She was willing to wash dishes by hand for the scarf.  (That’s desperate, y’all!).

What crazy trends are your kids into?

Our North Louisiana Garden, March 2012

Here’s a quick peek into our little garden today:

We are eating broccoli, spinach, and asparagus right now, but very, very soon we’ll have a whole produce section!  Here’s what we’re growing.

In the 4 x 4 bed:

  • sugar snaps
  • white potatoes

In the 16 x 4 bed:

  • lettuces
  • onions
  • chard
  • broccoli (from the fall and new)
  • cabbage
  • mint
  • parsley
  • asparagus
  • rosemary

In the north 8 x 4 bed:

  • roma tomatoes (just put these out)
  • banana peppers
  • green bell peppers
  • basil

In the south 8 x 4 bed:

  • onions
  • sugar snaps
  • carrots
  • tomatoes
  • chives

In the 2 x 8 bed

  • spinach
  • strawberries
I think we have all the raised beds we’ll need for a while.  I’m excited about how many veggies we can fit into such a small area. I’m relying on Square Foot Gardening and hoping that we really aren’t crowding our plants too much.  I’ve also done a lot of mixing and matching, mostly based on tips from Carrots Love Tomatoes .

Best.Invisible.Zipper.Tutorial.EVER

I showed you this skirt last week.

The only real change that I made to the pattern was using an invisible zipper instead of a lapped zipper.

I’ve decided that invisible zippers are just prettier.  I also think they are easier to install.

When I was ready to install my invisible zip, I realized that my “go to” invisible zipper foot would not work with my current machine.  Ugh!  Thanks to the Coats and Clark blog, I was directed to this fabulous post.  She doesn’t use an invisible zipper foot, but instead one with a big toe like you find with most machines.

Her tutorial is simple to understand and easy to follow.  Run, don’t walk, and check it out.  It will change the way you finish skirts forever!!!

Simplicity 2211: Lisette Skirt and Top

***Edited May 9, 2014:  Two years later, this is still a favorite post on this blog.  These Lisette patterns were so stinking popular!  Simplicity 2211 is the Market top and skirt.  As of today, the pattern was still available only in certain sizes on Simplicity.com.  If you’ve stitched up this top or skirt or both, I’d love to see them.  Just leave the link to your post in the comments.***

Simplicity 2211

After blogging about this top back in July, I finally took the time to finish the skirt!  I love these Lisette Patterns.  You can find my pattern review here, but here’s the nitty gritty.

I love the instructions in these Lisette patterns.  I followed the instructions by the letter on the shirt, without any difficulty. While I could have put the skirt together with my eyes closed, I followed the instructions to see if it was worth recommending the pattern to my sewing students. It definitely is!

Simplicity 2211 Lisette Skirt Front

The skirt is really cute, but I wish, wish, wish it had pockets! I also prefer an invisible zip to a lapped zipper, but that was an easy fix.

I used cotton poplin from the Lisette line for the top and a white canvas for the skirt.

Simplicity 2211 Lisette Skirt Back

I probably will not make the skirt again, as I have so many other skirt ideas rumbling around in my head. I would definitely recommend the pattern to others, even beginners. I think Lisette’s extra tips are well written, easy to understand, and perfect for novices. If you decide to make the skirt, take advantage of your blind hem foot to help you get the perfect topstitch along your skirt panels.

This is a really cute outfit and will be perfect for the spring (when it actually gets here on the calendar!).

Finding the Perfect Sibling Outfits

Why do Moms love to dress their children alike?  Who knows, but obviously, this is not a new phenomenon.  My Momma dressed us alike on occasion.  With the spring here, and then summertime beach pictures, I know many families are planning sibling outfits.

Sibling Outfits in gingham

Shopping for girls is fairly easy.  Shopping for little boys is easy too, if you know the right shop!  Finding sibling outfits is a little trickier when you have girls and boys.  Finding a custom shop helps.

But, what do you do when your children range from newborn to 12???

Here’s an idea.  Work for coordinating outfits instead.  Put the baby in a seersucker jumper.  Match big brother’s shirt to the jumper applique and add a seersucker touch.  Finish off the set with a seersucker flower headband for big sister to wear with a white shirt and khaki shorts.

Another idea:  Put the baby in a fun print.  Find big brother a polo one of the colors from the baby’s dress.  Big sister can add color with a bright scarf over her favorite white tee.

Etsy is an excellent source for coordinating accessories.  Here are few of my favorites from EtsyKids Team members:
